Our
Scoutmaster would like to encourage all Scouts to work on their
merit badges throughout the year. A great source for information
on merit badges and merit badge requirements can be found at meritbadge.com.
This website has all of the requirements and worksheets to fill
out. We would especially like to see more Scouts working on Eagle-required
merit badges.
As
a Scout goes for each merit badge, here are the steps he needs to
take. Remember, the buddy system and two-deep leadership should
be followed at all times.:
- Talk
over plans for the merit badge with the Scoutmaster. Ask him to
sign a merit badge card.
- Read
the merit badge pamphlet for that particular badge to become more
familiar with it (available from the troop library, Scout shop
or local library).
- Look
on the list
of approved counselors. Call the one that lives the closest
and make an appointment.
- Be
on time for the appointment. Take along the merit badge card,
a notebook, paper and pencil and any other materials that might
be needed. Wear the Scout uniform, of course, and be neat and
clean in appearance.
- Be
attentive to the information the counselor offers. Take notes
on what needs to be done. Be sure everything is clear.
- Set
a time for the next appointment to save a phone call. Note the
date and time on the notepad.
- Then,
begin the actual work on the merit badge. Call the counselor if
anything is not clear.
- When
the work on the badge is complete, go for the second appointment.
