About
Troop 905
The
Boy Scouts of America is a program for boys 11 through 17 designed
to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program
and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster.
Troop
905 has been around for over 25 years. We belong to the Twin-Valley
District in the San
Francisco Bay Area Council. We are in Dublin,
California - a city in the Bay Area about 40 miles southeast
of San Francisco. We meet every Tuesday night from 7:00 - 8:30 PM.
We meet behind the Dublin/San Ramon Water District's building,at
7051 Dublin Blvd. in Dublin, California. It is commonly known
as the "Scout Shack". We currently have 76 boys on our
roster.

Troop
905 has been consistently honored with
the Quality Unit Award |
Meetings
At
our meetings we have patrol activities, skill instructions, games,
and we may work on merit badges. We currently
have eleven patrols in our troop. Patrols are Boy-run, led by a
Patrol Leader and his Assistant. Each patrol also has an assigned
Adult advisor available to support the boys' in their endeavors.
Outings
Troop
905 has a year-round outings program, with an overnight outing every
month planned by the Scouts themselves. We also have many planned
hikes and community service projects. Additionally, the Troop or
any of the Patrols may plan day hikes or other activities during
the year. Because of our active camping program, we offer Scouts
the opportunity to participate in seasonal sports without their
feeling left out of the Scouting program. Check
the calendar for specific dates and activities.
The
Troop outings program is designed to provide the Scouts with fun,
new skills, and advancement. In addition to meeting requirements
for advancing in rank, outings provide opportunities for earning
Merit Badges, including Camping, Cycling,
Hiking, Cooking, Backpacking, Pioneering, Orienteering, Wilderness
Survival, and many others.
Summer
Camp
Every
summer, we go as a Troop to the SFBAC Scout
Camp at Wente, which is in northern California by Willits.
This year we will be attending the week of July 28 - August 4.
Leadership
Training
Troop
905 is a boy-run troop. Boy leaders plan and execute their own program,
with parent participation and support. New Scouts begin with small
jobs under the guidance of more experienced Scouts. As their skills
and knowledge improve, new responsibilities are given to them.
Learning
leadership skills is one of the most important products of being
a Boy Scout. Troop 905 has a Junior Leader Training program for
the boy leaders. Each Scout will learn the skills needed to carry
out his job in the Troop and will learn how to pass those skills
on to other boys. In addition, we encourage participation in the
Brownsea
Junior Leader Training Program and have many of our own boys
on Brownsea staff.
Brownsea
is a one-week Junior Leader training course to train Scouts 13 years
old, or older, in the leadership of their Patrol and Troop. Held
annually at Wente Scout Reservation.
The goal is for each boy to leave Brownsea with increased self-esteem
and more confidence in his leadership ability.
The
Patrol Leaders' Council (PLC) consists of the Senior Patrol Leader,
the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, those with Trop positions and
the Patrol Leaders of each patrol. This group meets monthly with
the Scoutmaster to plan Troop meetings and outings.
Additional
Opportunities
In
addition to being very active in the Brownsea JLT program, Troop
905 is also very active in the Order
of the Arrow. The "OA" is an honor camping society.
Troop 905 belongs to the Achewon Nimat Lodge #282 Seunan Village.
- The
Achewon Nimat Lodge helps set up and take down all of our camps
each year
- Provides
funding to support camp projects
- Provides
manpower on camp construction projects
- Provides
a Winter Camp Awareness Seminar that helps over 500 youth a year
be better prepared for winter camping
- Recognized
as a top lodge in the W3A section year after year
To
become a member, a youth must be a registered member of a Boy Scout
troop or Varsity Scout team and hold First Class rank. The youth
must have experienced 15 days and nights of camping during the two
years before his election. The 15 days and nights must include one,
but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive
days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the
auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance
of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps.
Scouts are elected to the Order by their fellow troop or Varsity
team members, following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity Scout
Coach.
Troop
905 also sponsors a Venture Crew. Venturing
is for young men and young women ages 14 to 20. It includes challenging
high-adventure activities, sports, and hobbies for teenagers that
teach them leadership skills, provide opportunities to teach others,
and give them an opportunity to learn and grow in a supporting,
caring, and fun environment.
Troop
905 regularly participates in the National
Jamboree (10 boys attended in 2001), International
Jamboree (we have 1 boy attending this year in Sattahip, Thailand!)
and Philmont
backpacking program.
